bog jism in public

August 20, 2007

yo. who’s free this wednesday night for a bog jism in public? and secondly, where and what should we do? we could go back to “the tunnel”, with it’s flow of bemused pedestrians. I’ve had a few other ideas for Bog Jism practice: 1. doing it outside the QVB, in particular near the statue of the Queen, in the aural shadow of that weird voice that speaks and freaks the unsuspecting out. 2. the walking bog. where we walk down a street in the city – any street with shops basically – and log what we encounter. 3. the wall bog. we go down to Sydney’s own 5km “wall” and log by the side of it.

whaddya reckon?

  1. i erection number 1 or 3. walking bog seems a bit frenetic, i kind of like the idea of hanging in one spot. 1 is an easy option and would be effective. 3 would be wicked, but we may well get moved on. also, who’s gonna volunteer to be the bringer-of-the-a4-material? asti

from what i can see there’s a few different things that could come of the boggin. i see 123 above as being really quite different from what we’ve done in a room before. what happened at joel+pat’s place was pretty nice i thought, but what that was focussed on there was really close listening to the sound as a whole by everyone involved, including quite a bit of dynamics in terms of volume and texture.
that can’t occur so well in a street setting. boggers are more likely to respond to surrounds than each other and there’s not really such thing as ‘careful’ listening in an environment with passers by and cars.
Note though that i’m not saying that public bogging isn’t a good idea, just that its a different one, with different requirements for making a performance ‘work’ or create interest for the public and boggers.

(another thought – if there’s some idea to head towards something at tina then it’d be good to try to emulate whatever conditions that might end up being in.. what will that be? like any of 1, 2 or 3 or no?)

that gets me no closer to recommending 1,2,3 or saying if i’ll be there. (?!) um, i recommend QVB, if we’re keen on pursuing the public bog. can i make it? i hope so!

i should be able to make it, i think. i would probably go for one or three also. and somebody other than me should be nominated to bring the noise (i.e. source text).

I reckon our chances of being moved along if we loiter around the Great Wall of APEC are quite high. Could we be bothered dealing with narky security dudes or boofheaded cops?

I’m keen to keep practising somewhere where we can hear each other better. This does not mean ‘in a room at someone’s house’ although this clearly fits the criteria. If we do it somewhere out of our usual dens of sleaze can we make it somewhere where we can keep up with each other’s bogging without much struggle? Where is a good question…

Maybe the ‘pedestrian zone’ that emerges from Devvo Tunnel and takes you to Chinatown/UTS Library via the rear end of the DAB building and ABC? It’s not a pretty place and if it rains it’ll suck, but so will the QVB. But the noise of pedestrianism wouldn’t be as bad, we’d still need to project our voices well though coz its quite an open space.

Or, in a park under a tree in the dark? Whatever few passers-by can be puzzled or scared by the eerie noise of bogging coming from under the eaves of the old fig tree… and we might see a possum!
